So You're Thinking of Starting a Program?
Operating a child care center is a rewarding professional decision. It is also a business decision that requires that you understand your responsibilities and obligations. The Child Care Council of Westchester (CCCW) offers information on starting a New York State Office for Children and Family Services (NYS OCFS) licensed child care center. The 3-hour workshop includes information on financial considerations, physical space, developing a program philosophy, staff requirements and child/staff ratio. The fee for this workshop in $30.00.

An Info-Kit is available to help those interested in starting a child care center. Along with a copy of the current regulations, additional information is included to help complete the application, write the program description, and understand budget needs for a 2 year period of operation. The fee for the Info-Kit is $50.00.

The CCCW provides one on one technical assistance and consultation for those individuals who are interested in starting a child care center. For consultation fees, to register for an information workshop or to purchase the Info Kit, call 761-3456 ext.108, or e-mail us.

The Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
CACFP is a financial assistance program that promotes good nutrition and healthy eating. As an extension of the National School Lunch Act, CACFP is intended to assist child care programs with the cost of providing nutritious meals and snacks and improve the quality of nutrition and eating habits of children.

Fingerprinting Requirements
NYS OCFS requires that all child care staff, substitutes, volunteers, and consultants who have regular contact with children must be fingerprinted. The CCCW has set up times for FREE fingerprinting in their offices in White Plains and Yonkers. A schedule of fingerprinting offered at trainings is also available. Complaint Procedures
Anyone with a complaint about a licensed program should call 800-732-5207. This is the central clearinghouse number that will be transferred directly to the Yonkers Regional Office, NYS OCFS. The Yonkers Office can be reached directly at 914-376-8810 A licensed representative will visit the program, and mandate necessary action.

Anyone who suspects child abuse, call the Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-342-7472.

Directors Meetings
The Early Childhood Director's Association meets every month to offer support and share information with one another. All directors are invited to join this membership organization. Each meeting includes a report from the CCCW, updates on child advocacy and funding, and pertinent child care business and management guidelines. Directors often receive training credit for training provided at these meetings.

The meetings are held at the CCCW on the third Tuesday of every month from 1:00pm-3:00pm.
