Medication Administration Regulations

Since January 31, 2005, the Office of Family and Children Services has required that all child care providers who choose to administer medication to children in a child care setting, must fulfill additional training and requirements. Exceptions to this requirement are over-the-counter topical ointments, sunscreen and topically applied insect repellant.

Programs & providers must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and become approved to administer medications if you care for a child or will care for a child requiring medication as a result of a disability.

Some programs or providers may not be interested in administering a full range of medications. It’s important to know that you have the option of administering emergency medications only. Examples are: a child requiring a nebulizer or inhaler because of asthma or a child requiring an Epi-pen because of a severe allergy. With this option, you can care for children with asthma & allergies and will also be complying with the ADA.
