Infant Toddler Teacher Conference
The sixth annual Infant Toddler Teacher Conference held on October 24, 2007 at Manhattanville College was an enormous success. The conference was well supported with 128 Infant-Toddler providers attending morning and afternoon sessions. Among the participants were teachers, directors and owners from centers, family and group providers, and students.

Pilar Fort, MA from Zero to Three began the morning with the keynote, “Creating Positive Relationships with Parents and Supporting Cultural Diversity.” Participants overall response to the keynote were consistently positive. Some comments from participants are as follows:

  • “Pilar clearly revealed an acute understanding of what she discussed.  She took an approach that was understandable and everyone could relate.”
  • “I learn from Pilar how important it is to build strong and lasting relationships with families. It is extremely vital for infants/ toddlers to grow up in healthy and social environment.”
  • “I plan to be more open-minded, and aware of what parents might be experiencing.”

Following the keynote participants attended one of five workshops that explored the issue from different prospective. Topics included: “Using ITERS-R for Quality Care,” “Sharing Stories to See Strengths,” “Collaborative Conversations: Establishing Reciprocal Relationships with Families,” “Saying Goodbye at Child Care,” and “Parents and Programs: Sharing the Infant Toddler Experience.” To deepen the understanding of all each workshop leader collected questions from participants that were answered by Pilar Fort when the group came together for lunch.

Conference-goers were treated to an afternoon of five workshops that were fun and hands-on. Topics were as follows: “Song Time for Infants and Toddlers,” “First Friends- Celebrating Diversity and Making Friends through Children’s Books,” “Museum Quality Art by Infants and Toddlers,” “Creating  Fun Spaces for Infants and Toddlers,” and “Sensory/Messy Time.”

After-School Conference
After-School Conference A Resounding Success!

The 16th Annual Fall Afterschool Conference, held on Saturday October 21, 2006 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, White Plains, NY was a great success. Over 200 school age and family child care professionals attended “On Your Mark, Get Set… Grow! Marketing and Selling Your Program” and attended the over 20 offered workshops.

All attendees thoroughly enjoyed keynote speaker Steven Amick, a leader in the field of before and afterschool programs. Based in San Diego, CA, Steve discussed “An Entrepreneurial Approach to Afterschool” that detailed the importance of marketing programs to children and not parents. He also led two training sessions that focused on recruitment and retention of middle school children in after school programs and provided ideas and initiatives designed to increase enrollment, and keep it high.

Participant’s responses to the keynote were uniformly positive:

  • Focus on what is ‘in’ with the kids
  • I will learn what is fun for the kids in my program so they will be excited about the program
  • Steve brought his experiences to life!
  • Great speaker! He totally included the audience; he spoke to what I am doing.

Conference attendees chose from a variety of learning and training workshops that included: Service Learning: A Model to Engage Students; Supervising Inexperienced Staff, Inoculating Your Children Against Sexual Abuse, More Awesome Games for School Age Children and How to Effectively Market Your Child Care Program. Attendees also attended one of four workshops presented by artists from the Westchester Arts Council that focused on increasing math interest and skills through the use of arts-based activities.

This educational and fun day of networking and learning was enjoyed by all who attended, as evidenced in the following participant evaluations:

  • The conference was very exciting and informative. I learned a lot.
  • This session gave me great ideas I can implement to get kids interested in reading.
  • I will follow the trainer’s planning techniques to better our program.
  • The materials handed out were very useful and helpful. I can use them as a model to re-create my own.
  • This is a very engaging activity for school age children. It will keep the kids interested and involved!

We thank the Wallace Fund administered by the Westchester Community Foundation and the IBM Global Work/Life Fund for their major funding for the full day conference.
