New Autism Spectrum Workshop Series
For Parents, Child Care and Other Professionals 

The Council presents two upcoming Autism workshops:  Priscilla Gilman, author of "The Anti-Romantic Child: A Story of Unexpected Joy", will speak on parenting children with special needs on November 3rd and Dr. Patricia Towle will speak on Autism Spectrum Disorders on October 11th.

Priscilla Gilman to Speak on Parenting Children with Special Needs

The Council is pleased to bring Ms. Priscilla Gilman to Westchester parents and professionals on Thursday, November 3rd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Council office in Scarsdale.  Reading from her acclaimed memoir, Ms. Gilman will share her experiences of raising a child on the Autism Spectrum in her talk “School-Parent, Provider-Parent Collaboration: Working as a Team”. There will be a book signing and refreshments from 6 - 6:30 pm.

Dr. Patricia Towle to Present on Autism Spectrum Disorders

Child Psychologist and Training Director at the Westchester Institute for Human Development, Dr. Towle will present two workshops for child care staff and others working with young children:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder?  Learning About Young Children Who May Be “On the Spectrum” on Tuesday, October 11th, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
  • Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders in Young Children on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm

In her first workshop, Dr. Towle will provide an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) using video.  Participants will learn to observe the behaviors that signal the communication, social and play differences in children with ASD. The second workshop will cover effective and supportive strategies in dealing with symptoms and behaviors.  Dr. Towle will also emphasize the importance of addressing social-emotional development in the child with ASD.
