Many Voices Call for Child Care Funding

Nearly 150 parents, child care providers, nonprofit leaders, and business executives gathered virtually at our annual Westchester County Child Care Advocacy (Half) Hour in October, to call for continued child care funding in the 2024 Westchester County budget. Joined by Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins, Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi, and Legislator David Imamura, we updated the audience about the tremendous positive impact of the Westchester Works Scholarship Program and asked elected officials to maintain its funding (about $3 million for the awards) and raise the income eligibility cap so that more families are eligible. We also called on attendees to raise their voices in other venues… and now we’re asking you!

Help fund special scholarships

Option_3.jpg

Your 2023 #GivingTuesday donation to the Child Care Council will be special in two ways:

  • Your dollars will fund the Council's own scholarship programs, which allow us to help families who do not otherwise qualify for financial assistance. These scholarships make safe child care more affordable for families experiencing homelessness or domestic violence, for grandparents caring for grandchildren, for parents going back to school, and more.
  • CClean Commercial Cleaning will MATCH the first $5,000 in donations.

Our goal is to raise $35,000 on or before Giving Tuesday: November 28, 2023.

Together, we can ensure that safe, quality child care is a resource for families, instead of a barrier.

Support Westchester Works Child Care Scholarships

You have an opportunity to thank Westchester County Executive George Latimer and his team, and the Westchester Board of Legislators for funding Westchester Works last year, and again in 2023, and to ask that it continue in 2024.

The County Executive will release his 2024 budget in early November. Right now you can go ahead and make plans to attend one or more of the Board of Legislators' Budget Hearings to support on-going child care funding. Here are the dates and locations:

  • November 16th, Warner Public Library, 121 N. Broadway, Tarrytown, NY, 10591 at 6pm.
  • November 20th, Chappaqua Performing Arts Center, 480 N. Bedford Rd., Chappaqua, NY, 10514 at
  • December 6th, Westchester Board of Legislators Chambers, 8th Floor, 148 Martine Ave, White Plains at 7pm.

Note Nov 16th at Warner Library session starts at 6pm, the other meetings at 7pm. If you want to speak, arrive 45 to 60 mins. ahead of start time, as speakers go in the order in which they sign in.

Lots of ways to participate. You can observe and clap when others talk about the importance of child care. You can tell your child care story (up to 3 minutes) and thank Westchester County for its great support of child care all these years - and again in 2024. You can stand alongside someone else who speaks. Plus you can bring your children.

If you are unsure of how you might participate and support child care, contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

More info to come.

Thanks!
